Governor Fubara warns of oil output decline if Rivers faces further attacks

Following a spate of political unrest, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has issued a stern warning against political thuggery and violence that threaten the stability of the state. 

His remarks come in the wake of recent attacks that saw several local government secretariats set ablaze by political thugs in Ikwerre, Emohua, and Eleme Local Government Areas.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, October 8, Governor Fubara expressed his administration’s resolve to collaborate with the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

 

The new commissioners inducted into the Rivers State Executive Council are Hon. Israel Lebura Ngbuelu, PhD; Hon. Evans Bapakaye Bipi; Barrister Otamiri John Ngubo; and Hon. Barrister Benibo Anabraba.

Governor Fubara recalled that during the swearing-in of newly elected Local Government Council chairmen on October 6, 2024, he had cautioned against possible unrest from disgruntled elements unhappy with the election outcome. His warnings proved prescient as political thugs soon after launched attacks, burning down council buildings.

 

“I had foreseen this unrest. Some individuals, unhappy with the election outcome, are going to great lengths to disrupt peace in Rivers State,” Fubara stated, emphasizing that the perpetrators would face justice. He also urged Rivers residents to remain calm as the investigation proceeds.

While acknowledging the frustrations of Rivers residents, Governor Fubara praised their restraint amidst the violence. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and warned against retaliation, stressing that violence would only harm the state further.

“We are carrying a basket of precious eggs, and we must handle it with care and wisdom,” the governor said, urging citizens to prioritize peace.

 

Governor Fubara also addressed the ongoing issue of oil theft, highlighting the damaging effect it has on both the state and Nigeria’s economy. He called for concerted efforts to curb pipeline vandalism and boost oil production, noting that the country's current revenue from oil was insufficient to meet its needs.

 

“Our focus must remain on curbing oil theft and ensuring pipeline security. Only then will revenues increase, allowing us to fund critical development projects for Rivers State,” he stated.

 

Despite the current political tensions, Fubara assured residents that his administration was making steady progress on a series of projects, promising to unveil significant developments by the end of October 2024.

 

Congratulating the newly appointed commissioners, Governor Fubara urged them to be diligent, loyal, and dedicated to their roles, expressing confidence in their ability to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
