The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis d+ed from a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.
The 88-year-old pontiff had faced ongoing health challenges in recent years, including a chronic lung condition from his youth and a severe respiratory crisis in February that led to a 38-day hospital stay.
The Vatican also released his final testament, where the late pontiff requested a simple burial “in the ground, without particular ornamentation,” with the single inscription “Franciscus.” He wished to be laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, rather than the traditional St Peter’s Basilica.
An anonymous benefactor will cover the cost of the funeral. His coffin may be moved to St Peter’s Basilica as early as Wednesday to allow public viewing.
Despite his condition, Pope Francis appeared on Easter Sunday to bless thousands at St Peter’s Square, just a day before his passing.
Earlier that day, he had met privately with US Vice President JD Vance. Bells rang out across Rome as news of his de@th spread. The first Jesuit and first Latin American pope, Francis was widely admired for his humility and deep concern for the poor.
He also stirred debate within the Church for his outspoken views on capitalism and climate change. Seven days of mourning have been declared in Argentina and Brazil.
